Richard Serra’s Torqued Ellipse and Constantin Brancusi’s Endless Column are the catalysts for this project that explored the capabilities of water jet cutting a marble slab. The torqued elliptical form, which can be understood as a continuous ruled surface, pushed the 5 axis limits of an OMAX water jet cutter. Four different types of pieces were produced: a transformation of a circle to an ellipse and three ellipses with varying degrees of rotation (0, 45, 90). The pieces can be stacked in an endless number of configurations to produce a column of varying shape.
