Stepped House

An existing one-story home in Menlo Park was transformed through the introduction of a new entry and two-story addition. A new central circulation axis reorganized the interior spaces of the first floor and allowed for a direct connection between the front door and the new public spaces that were placed at the back of the house. The new entry features the material palette and formal themes used on the exterior remodeled portions of the house: red cedar siding wrapped interior volumes set inside a frame of vertical concrete panels that lap horizontally to form the roof. Once past the entry, the views expand as you move from the front door to the rear of the house. Twelve-foot ceilings and large windows define the new combined living/kitchen that opens onto the media and dining room. The design of the two-story addition capitalizes on the unusual triangular shaped rear yard by adopting a stepped massing strategy with corner windows that allow for diagonal views connecting interior spaces to the furthest corner of the lot. A master suite with private deck forms the second floor of the new addition and is stepped in section to define space while still being open in plan.
