An existing one-story home in Palo Alto was transformed through an extensive renovation of both its interior and exterior, including a new entry and two-story addition to fit the needs of a growing family. Shifting the front door to align with the main façade allowed for the introduction of a central, two-story entry hall that reorganizes the arrival sequence and creates a clearer distinction between public and private spaces. Removing the walls that previously separated the living, kitchen, and dining areas established an open floor plan for the home’s public spaces. The identity of each room is maintained through the careful design and placement of wood cabinetry, which subtly defines individual spaces while preserving visual connections and continuity throughout. New windows and doors strengthen the relationship between the interior and exterior, providing direct access to outdoor decks. This indoor-outdoor connection extends to the first-floor bedrooms through the introduction of new window and door openings. The new two-story addition accommodates a home office on the first floor and a master suite with a private roof deck on the second. Access to the roof deck is integrated into a built-in cabinet that doubles as a stair. Finish materials were selected for their simplicity and durability. The exterior combines integral-colored stucco, red cedar siding, and clear-anodized aluminum, while the interior features polished concrete floors and clear-coated ash veneer cabinets.
