The Vault Lamp explores the form of the barrel vault as a surface for receiving and reflecting light. The word vault has its roots in the Latin word volvere meaning “to roll”. The technique of rolling to manipulate material became instructive in the fabrication of the piece. Constructed from a single sheet of metal, the fixture is generated through a series of rolls and folds that establish both its geometry and structural logic. The resulting form examines how a simple curved surface can shape the perception of light and shadow. The project also investigates material efficiency through a fabrication process that minimizes waste, producing only a small amount of offcut material. A white powder-coated interior enhances the reflective qualities of the surface, making visible the gradual transition of light across the length of the vault and emphasizing the subtle variations created by its curvature. As an ongoing exploration, the lamp is intended to accommodate a range of material and finish variations. Future versions may incorporate thin wood veneers, polished chrome, or different color treatments, allowing the same ideas to be examined through different material expressions. In this way, the Vault Lamp serves as a study of how geometry, material, and light interact to produce atmosphere and define form.
