This project is the third in a series exploring the phenomena of visual perception. We were asked to design a space for Social Practice, a new program at California College of the Arts. As an art form centered on human interaction, social discourse, and community collaboration, Social Practice required a flexible environment where gathering, working, and teaching could occur within the same space. The primary constraint was two large structural columns at the center of the room, effectively dividing it in half. The design encloses the columns within a central wall, leaving the remainder of the space open for occupants to determine its use. Two large movable display walls, set perpendicular to the central wall, complete the intervention and allow the space to be quickly reconfigured to suit different activities. Four configurations create a continuous gallery, a larger gathering space with back-of-house work areas, smaller workspaces, or a split studio. This flexibility allows occupants to interact and collaboratively transform their environment, embodying the ethos of this emerging form of art practice.
