This project continues the investigations begun in Form Follows Function and expands the Unsolicited series, which reimagines canonical works through speculative architectural interventions. Part homage and part reflection, the series seeks to establish a dialogue across time between existing works and new architectural possibilities. While earlier projects in the Unsolicited series focused on three museums, this series focuses on three spaces of contemplation. Derived from the Latin orare (“to pray”), oratories are intimate places designed for focused worship and reflection. Modest in scale, they typically feature unified interior volumes and acoustics suited to spoken prayer and chant. One such space is found within Le Corbusier’s La Tourette monastery, which serves as the point of departure for the Other Oratories series. Where Form Follows Function explored singular geometric transformations, the roof forms here are doubled, allowing them to respond to and reflect upon their architectural surroundings. The twin-crowned intervention proposed for the central courtyard of La Tourette acknowledges its oratory counterpart while establishing a distinct identity of its own. At the Brion Cemetery, an intervention appears to hover above a reflecting pool, creating an additional place for contemplation while reinforcing the cemetery’s recurring themes of duality and reflection. At the Woodland Chapel, a pair of oratories were added to frame the approach and form a miniature cour d'honneur.
